An endless project: Over the River
5.9 miles (9.5 km) of silvery, luminous, fabric panels hanging over the Arkansas river in South-central Colorado: this is the plan of the endless project Over the River by the artists Christo e Jeanne- Claude, masters of Wrapping Art. Started in 1992, the project hasn’t been realized yet and has remained on paper, in a never ending series of design drawings.
In the project, Over the River is a temporary installation situated in eight distinct areas of the Arkansas River, recognized by the two artists for their aesthetic merits. The work is visible from the streets that run along the river and every passer-by will become its visitor. In addition, the river will be always accessible and the bright and translucent factory of the panels permit to highlight the contours of the surrounding nature, if they are observed from below. “Over The River would join the other recreational activities and the natural life of the river” the artists say.
The work has been slowed down over the years by continuous trials relating to environmental issues regarding the safety and the impact that the installation could have on the territory. In April 2014 there was progress in favor of the work of the two artists. We hope, in any case, that the environment will come out safe and enhanced!
