A glance over Cildo Meireles’ Sea
If you are in Milan don’t miss the monumental installations by Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles in his retrospective exhibition at Hangar Bicocca.
Among the twelve stately installations in the exhibition, realized from 1970 to present, there is one dedicated to the concept of the sea without frontiers: Marulho (1991/1997).
It’s a virtual sea created with 17thousand books open on pages showing photos of sea water. From the jetty the spectator dives into an immense blue that fascinates the eyes and is lulled by the movement of waves created by the pages while voices repeat the word “water”. It’s the poetic concept of water combined with the idea of the seduction of colour that is evoked by the artist in this work.
